Hi everyone, last week, we talked about successful aging and how to move to thrive as you look into the retirement phase of your lives.
Today I want to talk about knowledge and humility as a healthcare provider when it comes to YOUR health.
I was reminded of Mark Twain’s quote this morning by my friend, It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.
I want you to ponder that for a minute.
There was a time in my life when I thought I knew everything, after all, I had a doctoral degree and a masters to boot.
Then when it came to my struggle with Lupus, I was left confused and frustrated about what was going on with my body.
I was seeking a definitive answer and was officially diagnosed with Lupus and I kept asking questions to my then rheumatologist about my prognosis.
All that I learned in school was NOT so helpful when it came to managing my own illness.
Questions left unanswered and toxic medications were recommended to “manage” my symptoms.
What I think I was asking is how can I reverse my illness? Is it a permanent companion for my life? How do I live with Lupus? Will I ever get better?
I was told no one knows by the most renowned physicians at the time. That was an unacceptable answer for me.
Thus began my journey to find my own answers.
Fast forward 18 years of unanswered questions, various experiments with my body, further training to answer those questions leads me to the following:
YOU are your best advocate when it comes to YOUR health.
What you choose to do everyday determine the fate of your health and/or your disease.
You can mitigate your disease and optimize your health. It’s simple.
1. Start with your Gut: No matter what your symptoms are, start with your gut. Take probiotics, eat whole foods high in nutrients, supplement as necessary. This is up to you, you choose to or not.
2. Start Moving! Take care of your Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal System, fancy word for nerves, muscles, and bones. It’s under your control, just start moving. Follow me on You tube, simple 5 minutes a day is all you need to get what you did in step 1 into your body to be used.
3. Start Meditating: Take care of what you feed your mind. It really does matter! Our brain is the operating system like your computer. To me your mindset is the most important. You need to Reboot every so often so that your brain can enhance step 1, and step 2. Just five minutes to just sit and breathe in silence. I must say, your mind does need training so commit to the practice everyday and you’ll be surprised at powerful this is in your life.
It’s actually simple but we make it so hard.
I tend to dig rabbit holes and I know many of you do the same to get the specific answer to your specific symptom.
While that strategy has it place, what you’ll find is that if you practice the three steps above, rest just takes care of itself.
Our bodies by default is busy healing. And when it can’t they cry out to us through symptoms such as stomach aches, muscle aches, headaches, rashes, fatigue, etc.
So at the first sign of Dis – Ease, we should practice the three steps before we really do have to dig into the rabbit hole and put out the fire with toxic medications and/or surgery in some cases.
